Birds in Trees is an art photography project based in London. It aims to document the impact of female narratives on environmental history and explore women’s roles in shaping social conceptions of nature and cultural landscape. The project plants its roots in the environmental history and ecocritical study of the long nineteenth century, and primarily explores narratives from within, and with relation to, this period. It seeks with particular interest visual narratives which capture the relationship between female identity and the Anthropocene. In line with its academic roots, all photographs produced for this project are created using fully restored 1897 Kodak No.4 cameras in-field: one of Kodak’s most popular bicycle cameras and a model of pivotal importance to the ability of women to begin contribution to the photographic record.
